Our Coaches
Our Coaches
Over the years, Impala coaches have worked hand-in-hand with the Board of Directors and have helped guide, motivate, and promote the success and cohesion of the team. Their vision has contributed to Impala dominance in the Pacific Association Grand Prix race series, to a record-breaking number of qualifiers in every Olympic Trials marathon, and to widening the team’s presence in USATF national competitions. The team is grateful for their reliability and leadership and have trusted their knowledge to keep the team healthy and successful.

Jeff Gardiner
Assistant Coach
Jeff Gardiner is the Impala Assistant Coach and has been involved with running since he was in high school. He began coaching in the 1990s, starting the track & field team at Lick-Wilmerding High School and later becoming the Lick-Wilmerding cross country coach. He also coached the Team Diabetes Marathon program in San Francisco. In 2017, he was awarded a National Double-Goal Coach Award by the Positive Coaching Alliance. He has earned coaching certifications from USATF, NFHS, McMillan Running, and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country. Fundamental to his coaching approach is the basic value he learned from his high school coach: Let Each Become All that He or She is Capable of Becoming.
Training Philosophy
The benefit of group training with athletes of comparable talent is that athletes at all ability levels can achieve results that might not be attainable while training alone. The group imposes a form of discipline while at the same time fostering a strong sense of team spirit.
